Synerky 4-in-1 Knife and Scissor Sharpener Review

If you’re looking for a quick and budget way to keep your knives sharp, a manual knife sharpener, like the Synerky 4-in-1 knife and scissor sharpener is a good choice. The Synerky is very lightweight and portable, easy to store away in the kitchen, and it works well for sharpening basic kitchen knives and scissors with ease. Best of all is Synerky’s value price tag. This gadget is one of the most economical ways to keep your kitchen knives sharp and ready to use.

The Synerky 4-in-1 knife and scissor sharpener has a lot going for it. It has a sturdy non-slip base and ergonomic handle that’s easy to grasp and hold on to as you sharpen, which is very important for safety. It’s made of a very lightweight material, so it’s easy to move around, and doesn’t take up a lot of space in the kitchen.

What type of knifes does it work with?

The Synerky manual knife and scissor sharpener works on all sizes of household knives, giving you a great deal of flexibility. While I wouldn’t use it to sharpen my most expensive kitchen knives which require a more specialized type of sharpener, it does a great job on every day knives that most of us have many of in our kitchen these days.

In fact, I have a drawer full of dull kitchen knives that I’ve stopped using over the years because they have become chipped and dull beyond use. I pulled those knives out and sharpened them on the Synerky manual knife sharpener, and was impressed with the level of sharpness I was able to achieve with just a few passes through the wheel.

It’s also important to note that the Synerky sharpener includes a slot for sharpening scissors. I don’t know about you, but I always just throw out old pairs of scissors once they don’t cut well anymore, because it’s difficult or impossible to sharpen them with a honing steel. Having a device handy that will sharpen them will save time and money, not to mention the waste of throwing out a perfectly good pair of scissors.

Can be used with:

  • Scissors
  • Basic kitchen knife
  • Chopping knife
  • Pocket knife
  • Butchers knife
  • Meat cleaver
  • Pruning shears
  • Fishing knife
While the Synerky knife sharpener can sharpen any size knife, it is not made for use with serrated knives. Ceramic knives should only be sharpened in slot #3. Do not use with Japanese knives or single-blade knives. These are better sharpened professionally or with a sharpening stone.

4-in-1 Sharpening Options

When looking for a manual knife sharpener, it’s important to find one that offers the ability to sharpen various degrees of dullness. As I mentioned before, I have a draw full of knives in differing degrees of dullness. Some of them have large chips and some of them are just not quite sharp enough to cut through a tomato (which is always the sharpness test I use to determine if my knives are sharp enough).

The Synerky manual sharpener has four different sharpening options.

  1. Slot one is for scissor sharpening
  2. Slot two is for course grinding of heavily damaged knives
  3. Slot three is for medium grinding of dull knives and ceramic blades
  4. Slot three is for fine grinding, finishing and polishing of blades once they’ve been sharpened

How to Use the Synerky Manual Knife Sharpener

This is not a difficult tool to use. It’s very straightforward and easy to understand. The tool comes with a guide to show you exactly how to use it, so you won’t get it wrong and damage your knives.

  • The first step is to determine the level of dullness of your knife. If you can see notches or nicks in the blade, you probably need to start with the #2 slot.
  • Place the knife sharpener on a flat, non-slip surface and hold the handle firmly with your left hand, while holding
  • the knife in the other hand.
  • Place the blade of the knife, at the base of the blade, into the slot. Press down with only light pressure and slide the knife toward you with a smooth, sweeping motion.
  • Remove the knife and begin again. You will do this perhaps 2-4 times, based on the dullness of the knife.
  • Check the sharpness of the knife by cutting through a piece of paper or slicing a tomato.

In order to not cause damage to your knife, never push down with excessive force or slide the blade back and forth through the slot. The knife should only be moved in one direction while sharpening (toward you). Always clean the knife blade after sharpening and before use.

I had a little trouble sharpening my scissors in the scissor slot. At first attempt, the blade of the scissors kept getting stuck in the sharpening wheel, preventing me from pulling them toward me, as you would the knife blade. I finally was able to work them through the blade a few times. However, I didn’t notice a large improvement in their sharpness.

Going back to the sharpener, I decided to try pushing the scissors through the wheel instead of pulling, and that worked a lot better. The scissors went back to easily cutting through paper and thicker material like cardboard. They still don’t effortlessly cut through material, but they are noticeably sharper than before.
